As winemaking is concerned, we isolate special sections in vineyards that we work with. We are looking for a little more ripeness than is usual for us. In the case of the 2016 vintage we picked the exposed, or afternoon sun side of the vineyard row exclusively to marry with a barrel of our hillside Obsidian Vineyard estate Syrah. We used a higher percentage of new oak (50%) than is normal for Donelan. The end goal is a wine that encapsulates the vintage, is unique (sourcing) from year to year, and a wine that is pushing the boundaries of the Donelan house style.

This vintage is an unlikely combination of our estate Obsidian vineyard and cool-climate Kobler Vineyard. At Kobler we isolated, picked, and fermented one ton from the afternoon sun exposed side of the vineyard to marry with a barrel of our hillside estate Syrah.
