Donelan: Wine is a Jourey Not a Destination Knights Valley Syrah Wine

Vineyard Notes:

When referring to the Obsidian Syrah I have often said that if black had a smell, this would be it. And it is not just the fact that the extremely shallow top soil is laden with jet black obsidian rock, which is typical of Knights Valley wines. The wine is dark and mysterious. Combining a dry Spring with the free draining rocky soils, 2007 was a difficult vintage to farm with variability existing throughout the vineyard. Extremely low vigor from the site at the Knights Valley always produces Syrah with tremendous intensity and tannin. While the Obsidian syrah is the kitchen sink, and a massive one, the 2007 is not as massively chalky as the 2006 and with a few hours of decanting the wine is gorgeous and delicious.

Tasting Note:

Out of the black emerge aromas of earth, wet stone, blackberry puree, and chocolate covered plums. The trademark density of the wine is unmistakable and the tannins are rich and mouthwatering with perhaps a bit more restraint than 2006 (but do not worry its still Obsidian Syrah and still a wine of largesse!). This wine needs time to open but is another gem from one of our most spectacular vineyards.
