Donelan: Wine is a Jourey Not a Destination 2007 Nepenthe, Mendocino County Wine

Winemaking Notes:

The third crop of this young parcel at the top of Alder Springs vineyard has again given us a showing of the exciting quality of this planting. The small amount of Viognier, which came in earlier this year and fermented out to about 11.5% alcohol, provides delicacy and finesse to this Mendocino county wine. About 40% of the blend was fermented on its skins to dryness. This lends intense, compelling aromatics along with power and grip in the mouth. The rest of this Mendocino county wine was fermented in concrete eggs and aged in large oak barrels. And from all these components only a limited number of barrels were selected to construct the tastiest blend.

Tasting Note:

Dark gold in color, the wine is lightly tinted from the skin contact. While massively rich, the exotic aromas come off energized and precise with flint, fresh ginger, orange blossom, and freesia. The flavors follow through with bosc pear, tangerine zest, and grilled peaches. The palate is rich and luxurious, with a silky, mouth-filling entry and just enough grip to tighten up the unctuous flab the aroma might suggest.
