Winemaking Notes:
Inspired by the wines of Chateaunuf du Pape, the small southern Rhone region producing predominately Grenache-based wines, the core of Moriah is 65-80% Grenache sourced from the cool Dry Stack Vineyard in Bennett Valley. As with any of our wines, the goal is to create the best blend possible and therefore the percentages and varietals contained in Moriah vary from vintage to vintage: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, and/or Counoise. After fermenting with 100% of the stems, this Sonoma county wine is aged in 500 liter puncheons for 16-18 months prior to bottling. The Syrah has been sourced from a number of different sites in Sonoma county and barrels are selected specifically for their accompaniment with the Grenache. The Syrah is meant to add texture and depth to the Grenache’s aromatics and freshness.
Tasting Note:
At first a little brooding and dark with accents of vanilla and allspice berries, the aromatics open up to orange zest, crushed strawberries, cranberry, and white pepper. With hints of ripe cherries in the mouth, the wine has both sweet fruit and a crisp structure that is decidedly not overbearing. There is a tantalizing tension that sustains the sweet and savory flavors through a long and delicious finish. |
