Donelan: Wine is a Jourey Not a Destination Sonoma Coast Syrah Wine

Vineyard Notes:

Griffin’s Lair unique terroir is driven by the steady winds that pour from the Pacific Ocean through the Petaluma wine gap. Called such because of the low lying pasture land west of Petaluma, CA, the area is a funnel for cool winds everyday from nearly April through August. While the cooling influence definitely contributes to this savory, cool-climate styled flavor profile, the winds also create an incredible evaporative demand on the plant. Establishing early water stress on Syrah is critical to making significant gains in concentration and complexity on Sonoma coast wines, two things Griffin’s Lair Syrah has in spades. The winds, combined with shallow loamy soils induce the vines to produce small clusters with small berries and wines with big concentration.

Tasting Note:

Bottled this Fall after 24 months in barrel, this small lot of only the best barrels offers smoke, graphite, crushed mint, and hints of currant. The Griffin's Lair Syrah is richer and creamier than something like Cuvee Keltie, but more savory and austere than a Walker Vine Hill, for the moment the wine’s fruit is hidden beneath aromas loaded with savory herbs and meat. However in the mouth berries and lavender are lifted out in the rich, almost creamy mid-palate and long bright finish. This 2007 Griffin’s Lair Syra is only a veil of what is to come from Sonoma coast wines, and it is beautiful!
