Donelan: Wine is a Jourey Not a Destination 2009 Richard's Family Vineyard Syrah 2009 Richard's Family Vineyard Syrah

With five vintages now released, Richard’s Family Vineyard has become well- known for its unique aromatic profile. The beauty of this wine is the simplicity with which it is produced. It is a terroir driven wine if there ever was one. A rare 2-acre parcel nestled in the Schultz Valley near Annadel State Park in Sonoma Valley. This vineyard fits our perfect mold for single vineyard wine production: a complete wine that provides unique, even singular characters or markers that seem largely attributable to the fact that the grapes were grown in that location.

Truly one of the great Richards produced to date, the 2009 seems to combine the best elements of the 2008 and 2006 vintages. The aromas have never been so available at such an early date, producing classic Richards smoked lamb encrusted with rosemary and lavender, bright ripe cherry, and hints of cassis. Both structured and well-knit, as in 2008, the 2009 has an extra dimension of richness that hearkens back to the weighty 2006 vintage. The wine’s finish is well focused and invites another sip. As nice as the mouthfeel is, the wine’s nose is truly intoxicating. You won’t be disappointed and will likely find yourselves, as we do, drawing the glass to your nose over and over again to take in the unique Richards mark we’ve come to love.
