2014 Kobler Family VineyardSyrah
2014 will go down as a classic vintage for Kobler Vineyard Syrah. A combination of careful farming and multiple years of drought has produced a concentrated wine that is pure, extremely elegant and full of verve. For this single-vineyard wine, we co-fermented 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier. The Syrah and Viognier vineyards sit adjacent to each other, and simultaneously experience the ebbs and flows of the vintage—most importantly bathed by the cool coastal fog. The cool mornings at the property promote great acid retention in the finished wine, which balances perfectly with 2014’s trademark concentrated flavors.
Careful farming has allowed us to control the ripeness of the Viognier so that we may use it in the conferment as a tool of restraint. The Viognier counterbalances the salami flavored Syrah with flavors of gooseberries, white peaches and chutney, while providing the desirable minerality that makes the mid-palate sing.
We only use second and third filled barrels to produce this wine, which help to elevate the fruit without influencing the wine with oak flavors. After nearly two years in barrel, the wine is showing wonderfully, intensely aromatic, with great signs of aging ability.

Kobler Family Vineyard is located on a slightly elevated ridge along the eastern border of Green Valley in the Russian River Valley, and its distinguishing climatic influences are cool temperatures, fog, and afternoon breezes. The Syrah and Viognier vines find footing in free draining Gold Ridge Loam and are grown organically (the Viognier is also dry formed).

Spicier on the nose than the previous vintage, the 2013 Kobler is all about cracked pepper and salami with hints of fresh blackberry. Understanding ripeness at this cooler site allows us to capture full maturity at often lower potential alcohol, which preserves the rustic nature of a cool-climate site while promoting great density. Together, the Viognier and Syrah conjure umami characters making this an extremely exciting wine with savory, mouthwatering foods.

2012 Kobler Family Vineyard holds nothing back. After electing not to produce the 2011, we are thrilled to have this bold, single-vineyard Syrah back in our line-up. The 2012 Kobler doesn’t skip a beat: it is instantly recognizable and alluring, and hard to put down.
An ode to the savory, spicy nature of Syrah, the Kobler is co-fermented with 10% Viognier from the tiny parcel planted beside the Syrah. The Viognier heightens both the complexity of the palate and the floral aromatics, partnering with the Syrah to produce great weight and intensity balanced with energetic fruit and refined spice.

Aged an uncharacteristic 24 months in French oak (0 new oak), the aromas in this vintage are riddled with pure blackberry, even a touch of cassis, along with violets, and black pepper. Supremely elegant and only 12.8% alcohol the wine has a supple texture and deceptive length and we believe with its structure the 2010 will prove to be a very age-worthy version of Kobler Family Vineyard wine.
The 2009 is a co-fermentation of 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier fermented with 70% whole cluster (a reduction from the 100% whole cluster of the previous 5 vintages). It will be aged 18 months in French oak (0% new) prior to bottling. The aromas in this vintage are riddled with classic black and white pepper, black berry, and cured meats. Though lower in alcohol than 2008, this vintage appears to be weightier and richer though still within the confines of freshness we expect from this northern Rhone-like site.

Another vineyard impacted by frost, we had to segment and parse out several sections that will not end up in the final wine. However the low spring moisture proved an excellent source to control vine vigor and therefore yields. Resistant to the heat spells of early September due to their point of development, the berries benefited from the long, consistent, and dry September and October. The Viognier yields were extremely low, but we managed to take a page from the Northern Rhone and co-fermented it with the Syrah at 8%. Kobler Syrah was fermented 100% whole cluster and aged in no new oak. White and black pepper, salami, olive tapenade, and smoked meats lay on a plate smothered in oregano infused blackberry reduction sauce. A hearty sounding meal, the wine is light on its feet and is one of the most supple mouth feels of all the offerings. While not loaded with tannin, it is a wine that has proven to age quite well and will reward your patience if you can resist it young
