2014 Cuvée KeltieAllocated Syrah
The 2014 Cuvée Keltie is a remarkable wine and a great example of site selection and careful attention in the cellar. The barrel selection for Cuvée Keltie has continued to produce a wine that is both structured and rich without being ponderous. With no new oak used in the process, the mouthfeel is a result of both patience and selection. Patience comes from nearly two years in barrel which allows for both concentration of flavors but also mellowing of tannin. Selection is a result of understanding our sites better. We can isolate sub-parcels within larger vineyards that consistently carry the personality of Keltie. These sub-sections have a unique ability to be fermented nearly 100% whole-cluster with the resulting nose showing hints of dried tobacco, graphite and espresso bean—all preferred characteristics when fermenting whole-cluster.
An interesting unexplained phenomenon in barrel produces a wine that naturally carries aromatics often attributed to new oak: vanilla and smoke—yet we do not use any new oak. The wine explodes immediately from bottle with chocolate ganache, hot fudge, a sweet-petrol character and fresh rye bread. The wine is delicious, but it will benefit from cellaring as its youth is certainly evident.

2012 Cuvée KeltieTasting Notes
The beauty of our proprietary blends is the sense that they exist as working pieces of music. With time and performance, new interpretations take hold, adding to each blend’s identity and complexity with greater clarity and satisfaction with each passing year. The 2012 vintage provides Keltie with ample structure to support its notably rustic nature, enhanced by traditional winemaking methods. As in years past, the selection of blocks from Obsidian, Walker Vine Hill, Richards and Steiner Ranch Vineyards create a robust and dense Syrah with unsurpassed agility and unity. A wine that is uniquely Keltie, the blend’s legacy is of harmony between each barrel, as if Cuvee Keltie were a place, with its own unique soil and microclimate, a fantasy of thought-provoking Syrah.

2012 Cuvée KeltiePast Vintages
The 2011 has alluring texture and structure, with fresh aromas of dried cherry, rhubarb, and blueberry preserves which have increased with time in bottle. In the glass, Keltie reveals notes of crispy pancetta, stewed nettles, and dark-chocolate with smoked sea salt. These flavors persist with the precise pulse of a finely-tuned instrument, producing a serious wine that captivates our senses and our minds. The cooler vintage has resulted in a wine that is elegant and approachable even in its youth.

The 2010 Cuvée Keltie, made from 100% stems, neutral oak and indigenous yeast fermentation, smells of aged steaks, beef tartare, bacon fat, crushed rocks and blackberries.

What a vintage for Donelan Wines and what a vintage for Cuvée Keltie. Cuvée Keltie is created with a focus on tradition, barrel selection, and the savory elements known to Syrah. Its key ingredient is one of our core winemaking values: patience. As the potential barrels evolve over a two-year period, we frequently revisit this blend to ensure we are producing an inimitable wine that delivers purity, definition, and wonderful pleasure. We believe this diligence and patience has been rewarded as we present the 2008 Donelan Cuvée Keltie. Sourced from 5 cool vineyards, primarily fermented 100% whole cluster, and aged in a limited amount of new oak, we selected only 9 barrels that express a complete offering of Syrah’s potential. The nose is a wonderful blend of savory and rich fruit aromas combining cedar and white pepper with dark dried fruits and black cherry. While rustic elements in the mouth feel are decidedly Cuvée Keltie and consistent with the whole cluster fermentation, there is also silkiness, incredible depth, and balance on the palate. This wine is a bit showy, an aromatic and textural feast, enjoy with a similarly described meal!
