What is terroir? A wine of terroir captures a particular place. A wine tastes unique as a result of its place, capturing a comprehensive essence of that place that can only come from that one site. Learning about and tasting terroir is a time-intensive journey; it is an exploration of what characters of a site produce unique aspects in the wine. That some of our wines in our northern California vineyards have been likened to the great wines of France is flattering. However, our goal is not to discover “Rhone Terroir” or “Burgundy Terroir” in California; it is to discover and uncover new terroirs that produce compelling, inimitable wines that are directly a result of a unique interaction of vine and environment.
