2016 Winter Release

Our 2016 Winter Release has arrived!

As the 2016 wines are finishing in barrel, the vineyards have turned red and yellow, seasonal rains have returned to Sonoma County and it’s time to give thanks for another year.

We are excited to release this holiday offer and share the fruits of our labor. What better way to do that than to release two very impressive wines from our portfolio, along with a few special, never-before holiday wine packages from our family to yours.

We have seen overwhelming excitement for our Pinot Trio package, which is now sold out! However, we have decided to curate another thoughtful gift set: Cuvée Holiday.  Please read about our new releases and holiday packages below. To ensure delivery by Thanksgiving

New Releases

We couldn’t be more thrilled about the new wines in this release and know our fans have been waiting patiently for these. For the white offering, we have the 2015 Genevieve’s Block Chardonnay, which has been a show-stopper since its first vintage in 2013. In the March 2016 issue of Wine AdvocateRobert Parker described the 2014 Genevieve’s Block as:

“..grand cru Leflaive Batard-Montrachet-like green citrus and apple blossom and honeyed richness.
This is full-bodied, powerful, and impressive.”  96 points

The 2014 offering of Obsidian Vineyard Syrah is the next edition in what we believe will be a lengthy and evolving story from our estate vineyard. The 2013 Obsidian was an
impressive wine and a true fan favorite. Robert Parker described the 2013 as:

“Truly magical… Terrific fruit intensity, a full-bodied, sumptuous texture, and a long finish of close to 50 seconds make for a magnificent Syrah to drink over the next two decades.”  99 points

We will be including free-ground shipping on any full-case orders and of any mixture you put together of our existing wines. Please note that our cut-off date for shipping is November 16th, so please do not delay!

Tasting Notes

2015 Genevieve’s Block Chardonnay

We get most excited about the vineyards that produce the most engaging wines – that combine spice and fruit or intense freshness with indulgent richness. In other words, we love balance but also nuance, and revel in opportunities to work with wines that totally captivate the senses on all levels. The 2015 Genevieve’s Block Chardonnay is such a wine, capturing the true soul of the vineyard. The Genevieve’s Block is extremely enticing for its ability to be both bold and rich, with an electric palate that is mouthwatering and showing every indication of strong ageing potential.

Growing conditions in 2015 were highly favorable for this vineyard. Without late-season rain, the fruit achieved optimum flavor and freshness. Fermented in choice barrels that promote complex flavors, the nose is dominated by chai and baking spices, crème-brulée, butterscotch, almonds, and apple-pie flavors that move seamlessly through the palate as well, with beautiful salinity in the finish that goes and goes.

Instead of locking this precious gem away in a secure vault, we are excited to share this jewel of a wine with all of those who are interested in trying something truly special or seeking a very elegant white wine to adorn their table this holiday season.

2014 Obsidian Vineyard Syrah

This is the first Syrah we are releasing from our 2014 red portfolio and it is a stunner of a wine. Going into the 2014 vintage, we decided to invest time and energy into reinvigorating the vineyard to ensure its longevity and greater ecological sustainability. This six-acre parcel is in fact a 5,900-vine parcel that deserves to be worked on a vine-by-vine basis. To our great pleasure, more conscientious farming has unveiled additional nuances along the Obsidian flavor spectrum, proving that the vitality of the wine lies in the vitality of the vineyard.

The 2014 vintage as a whole is showing very exotic versions of each vineyard’s personality. The 2014 Obsidian is no exception. We believe our cellar practices help promote the vineyard’s terroir, but also showcase and preserve the vintage – two things we cherish about every wine. In addition to our more nuanced farming, we have come to see the vineyard in three blocks. The northern end has the largest vines and most likely the most deeply-rooted; the Syrah from this section is seductive, bringing chocolate ganache, black currants, fig and an expansive mouthfeel to the wine. The steepest part of the vineyard is known to us as “the slope,” and provides a truly remarkable dimension of elegance and finesse—adding a feminine quality that compliments the wine’s classic, masculine notes; the Syrah from the slope brings spiced fruit and fresh florals to the nose, with refined tannins in the mid-palate. The southern end of the property is the most stressed, with the harshest growing conditions. With rocky, shallow soils, the clusters are tiny, concentrated, and this fruit requires the most attention in the cellar to chisel away at its intensity. This section provides the graphite, tobacco, and earth on the nose.

Watching these three sub-sections come together is like watching the characters in a play stand together on stage to take a bow. After nearly 2 years in barrel, the wine is very youthful, yet already abounds with flavors and aromatics. We recommend a healthy decant to help unveil Obsidian’s full potential, or a long evening to enjoy the evolution in glass, or both.
